Prunus domestica x insititia 'Reine Claude Doree'
Reine Claude Doree, considered "the original" and best of the Green Gage plums, is from France. It's a small yellow/green plum ripe in August or September. It has an incredible sweet, juicy flavor regularly measuring up to 30 brix! Notes of honey and apricot abound, with just a hint of citric tang to balance the sugar. This natural cross between the larger European and the smaller insititia types (that includes Damsons) is thought to have originated in Armenia, and was a prized trading item along the Silk Road. Now you too can grow a little piece of history!
Blooms late; choose another Gage plum for pollination. Prefers to grow in hot summer climates where the fruit can sweeten to perfection.
