H. L. Judd Company was founded by Hubert. L. Judd, in Brooklyn, NY, 1869, (incorporated in 1885). However, their roots date back to Deacon Morton Judd, an English gentleman who established his own brass foundry business in 1830. Hubert L. Judd, was one of Morton's sons, who following in his father's footsteps, founded the H.L. Judd Company in Brooklyn, New York, specializing in decorative metal hardware. In 1886, H.L. Judd acquired the Wallingford plant from the family business. By 1895 the business had grown to several plants in Brooklyn, NY, Wallingford, CT and Chattanooga, TN. By 1897, operations in Brooklyn were discontinued, consolidating manufacturing in Wallingford. In the early 1910's, they began to produce a metal line of fine quality decorative products of sand castings in iron, brass and bronze including: doorstops, bookends, doorknockers, inkwells, etc. Their designs were notable and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 1930's. Many of these pieces are now collectible, due to their Art Nouveau style and the company's extensive history. The Judd Company was sold to the Stanley Works Company in 1954.
